Story Telling
Story telling has always held immense cultural significance for Indigenous peoples. It has been a vital means of preserving traditions, knowledge keeping, cultural identity and promoting emotional and spiritual well-being. Story telling fosters a sense of community and guides us towards resiliency in a safe manner.
The Art of Writing
therapeutic writing has a psychological approach widely practiced for its healing benefits. Through self expression writing allows a safe unjudgmental space for individuals to express their emotions, while processing their experiences. It provides a structured outlet of expression that may be difficult to articulate verbally. Overall the art of writing for healing is a powerful tool for self discovery, emotional processing and personal growth.
Healing through Sharing
When we share our experiences with others who have been through similar things we find mutual support, we are able to normalize situations reactions and reduce self blame. There is a sense of validation when affirming others have faced similar traumas. The act of sharing these stories empowers individuals and claims their power back.
Reading as Medicine
When we read and connect to stories similar to our own, it has medicinal effects on our mental and emotional wellbeing. We increase our empathy for other and in turn, ourselves. It allows us to engage in reflection and connect to our community while learning valuable insight in new coping strategies. Openly discussing our trauma reduces stigma and creates unity and understanding.
